Have you ever heard of diastema? Really, you probably have—even if you don’t know it. Diastema simply refers to a gap in someone’s smile. Typically, this gap is between the upper front teeth, though gaps can appear between anywhere. In fact, diastema can refer to gaps caused by missing teeth.
There are a few reasons you could have a gap between your teeth. For example, you could have teeth that are different sizes, missing teeth, or even teeth that are misaligned. Similarly, gaps can be the result of having teeth that are too small for your jawbone.
While there is little you can do to avoid these types issues, there are also other causes you can control. For example, gaps can be caused by gum disease and tongue thrusting. Unfortunately, if these issues aren’t addressed, the gaps in your smile can get wider.
Fortunately, there are a few options available to you, though we recommend speaking with Dr. John F. Williams for specific advice. Naturally, if your problem stems from gum disease, you could treat the issue. Similarly, your dentist can give you advice on what you can do for tongue thrusting. To close gaps—whether caused naturally or not—you could try orthodontics, such as braces or Invisalign®, or dental veneers. Veneers are thin, shell-like appliances designed to attach to your tooth. Finally, if your gaps are large enough, you may want to consider an implant.
